For a short period of time I rented a studio space on an organic farm near to my home in south west England. I wanted to make work that was specific to that location.
Spending all my days there I became mesmerized by the deep red soil that nurtured everything. The fields were rich in ‘weeds’ and the hedgerows bursting with life. The rich red colour comes from the iron content in the soil, which is the same reason our blood is red.
For this image, I took examples of wild plant species growing in the hedgerow (about 4 meters from the studio window) and made a negative image on paper using the plants themselves. The pigment is simply pure soil, crushed to a fine powder and sieved on to the paper.
Many of the images were not fixed, which is why there is only a single image representing this work.
